Back Beach Coastal Collectibles - Noosa

AVAILABLE NOW AUSTRALIA'S HOTTEST 100 SURFING LEGENDS

"I used to wag school and rush down to the beach with Mum’s ironing board" – CJ ‘Snowy’ McAlister.

First of all, to be up front, this is not a book about Australia’s ‘best’ surfers. As Phil Jarratt states in this book, there is no argument that Layne Beachley and Mark Richards are amongst the winnigest, but is that necessarily the only criterion against which surfers should be judged?

Australia’s Hottest 100 Surfing Legends is a book of human stories; the stories of 100 of the defining legends of Australian surfing, from ‘ancient history’ (pre‐ 1950s) to the roaring 2010s. From Snow McAlister’s early days of surfing on his mother’s ironing board to the strange tale of Westerly Windina (formerly Peter Drouyn), these profiles, filled with behind‐the-scenes anecdotes, tell of the trials and triumphs of the pioneers and the bad boys. From insider author Phil Jarratt, this is a riveting account of the innovators, outlaws and hooligans behind Australia’s surfing past, and the mavericks who are now moulding its future.

Australia’s Hottest 100 Surfing Legends is lavishly illustrated and features many rare and archival images, along with hundreds of gorgeous contemporary surf shots – it is truly a feast for the eyes.

About the Author

Phil Jarratt has spent his working life trying to work out whether to be a surfer or a writer. Most of the time, he has been both, working as a journalist for such publications as Sydney Morning Herald and The Bulletin, then as editor of publications as diverse as Australian Playboy and Penthouse, Tracks and Insight Travel Guides. He has also worked extensively in television, most recently for Foxtel Sports. He has written 25 books, the most recent of which, Salts & Suits, was shortlisted for this year’s Blake Dawson Prize for business literature. In the surf industry he has been Quiksilver’s European marketing chief, head of special projects in the US, and the director of 14 world championship surfing events around the world. Phil and his wife Jackie live in Noosa Heads, Queensland. They have three daughters and four grandsons.

Australia’s Hottest 100 Surfing Legends (Published by Hardie Grant, RRP $39.95) will be released in Australia on November 1, 2011.

Salts'n'Suits

WHAT THE MEDIA & THE SURF INDUSTRY HAS BEEN SAYING ABOUT SALTS & SUITS

I have just read your book, Salts and Suits. I thought that I knew a lot about the surfing game but I am far better educated now. It was a very entertaining read, knowing so many of the characters that surfing has produced over the years. As someone who was present at many of the events, you would have to be uniquely qualified to write such a book. I loved it.
Peter Turner ( Ex Kirra Surf)

It's a great read!
